14. Shop bought smoothies
Smoothies are a great way to ensure we get a healthy supply of fruits and vegetables along with all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other phytonutrients.
The thing is, often if we buy one for convenience in the store, chances are there’s some form of sugar added to add sweetness to our palate. Even if that sugar is in the form of honey, agave syrup, or maple syrup, it’s still sugar, it adds unnecessary calories, and adds no other nutritional value.
Then the answer is – to make your own! What might be easier than you think, all you need to do is invest in a blender or a dedicated blender like the NutriBullet. Typically, you’ll need a liquid base, such as water, cow’s milk, or a dairy-free alternative like protein-rich oat or pea milk. Then add a small banana for thickness, a handful of berries, and some other chopped fruit (frozen works great, we like strawberries, cherries, and melons). Anything green is good, so if you’re brave, try a handful of chopped kale or for a sweeter taste, try spinach. Then finally a tablespoon of nut butter or yogurt for a protein boost. Mix it all together, it only takes a few seconds and you’re ready – a healthy, low-sugar breakfast smoothie on the go.
